Finally the time is here - also in the Netherlands, decline is a fact! In a number of Dutch border regions the population is dropping, following the general European trend. In the future, decline will be in evidence all over the country, contrary to what the Dutch are used to in their expansion-oriented spatial planning. For designers, this situation is a source of inspiration. For policymakers and administrators, however, it seems less easy to face up to the new reality. A sense of urgency is lacking and political stand are avoided. What might the possible effects be of this 'shrinkage' (as the Dutch call it) and how should one approach it? How might positive vistas for the future still be opened up? As far as Dutch designers are concerned, the regions of Southern Limburg, Southeast Drenthe, East Groningen and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen will have to set an example for the rest of the country.
