Our critical review suggested that ethical theory, and associated substantial ethical positions, may have a larger role to play in ethical reflection than that envisaged by the authors of Environmental values. Scrutiny of the criteria for good decisions within democratic procedures shows that this is indeed the case. Pure democratic procedures are insufficient to provide good solution to conflicts between groups with divergent environmental values. Substantial ethical positions, backed by a consensus on important elements of ethical theory, have an important role to play in democratic procedures and democratic deliberation. The case of recreational hunting in Denmark illustrates how this works. The framing of deliberation about the acceptability of recreational hunting can be seen as something that is based on considerations of property rights and the weight of tradition. However, other concerns also enter into the deliberation. The weight of these concerns derives from a consensus on the importance of certain elements of ethical theories, such as concern about animal welfare and concern about the handling of wildlife in general. Hunters will be obliged to take these concerns seriously if they, on their side, want to gain respect for their values from other stakeholders.
