The article intends to draw the attention of the designers upon a recently developed requirement in design nl. the "Environment" and the sc. "Social cost" concerning material, energy and space. It refers to recent work and legislation in Europe and Japan. Concentrating further upon the problems raised by mechanical manufacturing, it surveys the problems originating in fluids, life cycle design, design for disassembly and related research.
