摘要

For Norman Schofield, the interest in spatial models of politics is not a short-term fling. It goes back more than 3 decades. His first contributions to this field dealt with majority voting and the existence of equilibria under pairwise majority comparisons. His path-breaking results, combined with those of Richard McKelvey, led to rather pessimistic conclusions regarding the non-arbitrariness of voting outcomes in committee-type voting bodies faced with decision alternatives that can be represented as points in multidimensional spaces. First, McKelvey showed that under apparently general conditions, the non-existence of a Condorcet winner alternative implies that any alternative can be rendered the majority winner.
