摘要

This inspiring and relevant book recognizes the current transformation processes in city and town centres across Europe. The 21~(th) century clearly is the age of the (inner) city. Dobson has written a readable and well-documented but somewhat casuistic book on the transformation of such centres from 'places to buy' towards 'places to be'. For many decades, our city and town centres were neglected because of the short term benefits of large retail developments in peripheral parts. Furthermore, investments in centres were solely focused on shopping. Dobson typifies this development as 'retail-led regeneration'. However, inspired by authors such as Jane Jacobs and Jan Gehl, Dobson clearly illustrates that as of the year 2017, a place that works well is a place for people. How to Save our Town Centres has succeeded in the ambition of starting a debate on a more humanistic practice of town centre planning and regeneration.
