摘要

This bold and timely book deserves to be widely read, as it deals with far more than just the state of our high streets. Julian Dobson's basic thesis is that the roles of town centres are wider than retailing, and deserve to be valued for their contribution to our 'common wealth'. After lamenting in the first part how the UK has lost both shops and civic facilities over the last few decades, in six chapters in the second part he puts forward practical proposals to show 'there is another way', to quote one of his favourite examples, Coin Street Community Builders. With over 200 references, it is hard to criticise any of the 'creative solutions to the challenges of place' that he promotes. Instead, we need to ask why it has been so hard for local initiatives to turn the tide, and whether Julian's prescriptions go far enough.
