Seldom has the introduction of a new tool revolutionized an already extremely fruitful field more than the application of laser light to atomic physics. Beyond tremendous improvements in spectroscopy, it has initiated the development of a totally new and fast growing branch of physics: laser manipulation of atomic particles. Physicists have moved from being mere observers to become players in the atomic world.
