Following the crises that shook the meat industry, NGOs and research centres (BLOOM, Oceana, INSERM, the National Museum of Natural History) and TerraEco magazine teamed up to lead an investigation in the fish and seafood sector in France. In comparison to similar studies in various EU countries, where high levels of seafood fraud in the sector were revealed (32% overall in Italy, 30% of all hake in Spain, 19% of cod in Ireland), it turns out that species substitution in France remains low, at around 3.5% (the UK has a similarly low level of 6%). A spokesperson for the European Commission told Europolitics Environment that "it is up to the member states to check this information and, if they feel it is necessary, to file a complaint to the Commission". The spokesperson added that if the Commission has had wind of certain information on this subject, it will not intervene, at least not at this stage.
