A plan of Japanese Mouse Clinic in RIKEN BRC

In the ENU mutagenesis project, we have developed a systematic and comprehensive phenotyping, about 400 mutants have been generated, as a disease models for human diseases. Beside, we have developed a high-throughput gene mapping system and a database system of in silico exploration for candidates of mutant causative gene, in collaboration with Omic bioinformatics data integration team of RIKEN GSC. Using these systems, we successfully identified causative genes of 62 mutants. All information of most of mouse mutants we generated is now open to public through our home page. All these achievements are highly appreciated by international community. In the next stage we plan to reconstruct the existing phenotyping platform and to rebuild_a new platform. The new system has hierarchical structure, consisting of a basic pipeline that inherits the existing platform and the second pipeline, which is optimized for more in-depth phenotyping assays. Using this system, we will perform more comprehensive and profound phenotyping of mouse mutants as a Japanese Mouse Clinic, which are opened for Japanese science community. It is expected from the results of preceding foreign phenotyping projects that existing mouse mutants are revalued as new disease models by identified novel phenotypes. We also plan sharing of detailed information about standard operating procedures (SOP) of phenotyping analyses with other related large-scale projects, such as EUMODIC (European Mouse Disease Clinic) and MPP (Mouse Phenome Project), and annotation of mutant phenotypes with internationally standardized method, thereby we will contribute to international efforts for standardization of mouse phenotype data.
