Mouse model of human diseases are likely to be characterized by their behavioral phenotype. The first step in behavioral phenotyping is to evaluate the mutant mice for gross abnormality that will interfere with behavioral testing. For example, a mouse cannot swim is useless for forced swimming test and water maze test. Foreknowledge allows the investigators to design alternative tests are unaffected by the defect. To examine an inclusive behavior, SHIRPA procedure is useful and has a three stage. The primary screen utilizes standard methods to provide a comprehensive behavioral and functional profile. The secondary and tertiary screen stages are a various behavioral battery test to characterize mutant mice. We have used the modified screen of SHIRPA procedure. In this session, we would like to introduce a behavioral analysis of senescence-accelerated prone mouse 6 (SAMP6) mice. SAMP6 has been reported to be a model for senile osteoporosis. We analyzed emotion-related behavior of SAMP6 by using a modified primary screen of SHIRPA and a battery of tasks including the open field test, elevated plus maze test, light-dark exploration test, marble-burying behavior test, forced swimming test, and tail suspension test. The behavioral tests showed the alterations of emotional behavior of SAMP6.
