Low-Protein Diet Improves the Breeding Performance of Epileptic EL Mice

We operate the Laboratory Animal Resource Bank (LARB) for the development, collection, maintenance, preservation, supply and database construction of various laboratory animals, especially disease model animals, for the stable and efficient utilization of these animal resources essential for the field of biomedical research including the development of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Because some of the disease model animals exhibit very poor reproductive performance, it is essential to improve their breeding efficiency in order to maintain the resource bank. In this study, we compared the reproductive performance of epileptic EL mice fed a high-protein diet (CMF, Oriental Yeast Co., Ltd.) or a low-protein diet (CE-7, CLEA Japan Inc.). During the mating period of sister-brother EL mouse pairs (from 5 weeks-old to 6 month-old), the average number of births (litters) per one pair was 1.6 and 2.3, and the total number of pups born per one pair was 9.8 and 14.2 for pairs fed CMF and CE-7, respectively. These results indicate that the low-protein diet can improve the reproductive performance of EL mice.
