In this study, we have established a colony of hairless descendants of MHDs. In addition, we clarified the dermatological characteristics of hairless dogs and their usefulness as a laboratory animals. This study can be summarized as follows. 1. An autosomal dominant monogenic gene (Hm; hairless, Mexican type) was responsible for the hairless characteristics of MHDs. 2. Red blood cell counts, hemoglobin concentrations, and packed cell volumes were slightly higher in hairless dogs than in Beagles. 3. The skin of hairless dogs clearly showed age-re- lated changes in the structure. 4. The epidermis of hairless dogs contained abundant melanocytes. Their skin clearly showed UV-induced changes such as sunburn and suntan reactions. 5. Sunscreens effectively protected the skin of hairless dogs from sunburn and suntan reactions induced by solar exposure. 6. Delayed type hypersensitivity reaction was weaker in hairless dogs than in Beagles. 7. Neonatal hairless pups developed hair growth reactions following minoxidil treatment only in the early period after birth. 8. The spotted pigmentation occurring on the skin of adult hairless dogs was depigmented by application of HQ. 9. Hairless dogs developed spontaneous comedones in the skin and the severity of these lesions subsided with the application of anti-acne agents. Hairless dogs are expected to be a useful model for the investigation of photodermatology, and the treatment of comedones, pigmentation and alopecia.
