Beneath the blue, pristine waters of Lake Tahoe, a potential seismic disaster lies in wait. Measuring fault lines along the lake's basin, a Scripps-led research team recently estimated that an earthquake of magnitude seven could take place every 3,000 years.This event could generate tsunami-like waves as high as three to 10 meters (10-33 feet). "Such an event would carry the potential for significant damage to the Lake Tahoe region, particularly through the tsunami waves that would emerge with little or no warning," said Graham Kent, a geophysicist at the Cecil H, and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps. "There are thousands of people on the beaches here in the summertime, so it's important to find out more about the history of this type of event in the area."
