Proven as an integrated onboard system providing navigational decision-making support for ship's officers, GL Maritime Software's SeaScout system offers added functionality as a tool to prevent excessive sloshing in the cargo tanks of LNG carriers. Issues relating to cargo sloshing have commanded greater attention with increases in tank size and with demand for partial filling driven by new trading profiles, although the effect of inevitable cargo boil-off during an LNG carrier's voyage increases the space for sloshing even when loading has been to the highest filling ratios. Set in train by the motions of a ship in a seaway, or while loading or unloading in exposed offshore locations, sloshing can impose high impact pressures on the tank boundaries, running the risk of damage and attendant consequences.
