In its current position, the Costa Concordia only exposes the damage it incurred on its port side. The extent of damage hidden under the water has only been hinted at in some of the released film footage taken by divers. However, the damage that can be seen is so extensive as to lead to the conclusion that more than two compartments are likely to have been affected. This would exceed the flooding envisaged in the SOLAS damage stability requirements, so most of the SOLAS assumptions regarding flooding would have been compromised. Exactly how severely they were compromised may eventually come to light if the investigations can be completed with the ship intact rather than being broken up during recovery operations.
