In the darkest days of the recession, shipbuilders wei falling over themselves to establish or expand their presence in the offshore sector as orders for other ship types melted away and cancellations exceeded contracts. Today, as confidence returns to other sectors builders are less reliant on offshore ships but still see them as a rich vein to be tapped. In terms of numbers, offshore ships make up almost 9% of all current newbuilding activity - and that excludes ship types such as seismic research and wind turbine installation vessels along with the crane ships some operators plan to employ in the offshore sector.
