It is the world's largest builder, but Hyundai Heavy Industries' involvement in offshore, and in particular drillships, is a relatively new venture. Last November the delivery to Transocean of the Deepwater Champion marked Hyundai's entry into the ranks of drillship builders. The Deepwater Champion is a sixth-generation drillshipand an enhanced version of Dutch designer GustoMSc's P10000 design. As the designation suggests, the ship is capable of operating in water depths of up to 10,000ft (3,050m), but it has the potential to be upgraded to 3,660m. It can carry out drilling to 12,000m. Transocean already operates two earlier versions of the design in the shape of CRLuigs and Jack Ryan.
