Ship designs dedicated to a very limited range of cargo types have evolved through 50 years of specialisation within the shipping industry. In consequence, the variety of cargo handling gear on a merchant ship is now frequently very limited - if any exists at all. Tankers need only hose and store cranes and most large bulkers are gearless. In the deepsea liner trades, containerisation has virtually eliminated the need for traditional lifting gear, but ever higher deck loads have prompted the development of container bridges, lashing bars and twistlocks.
