Diesel-electric becamea part of icebreaker technology back in 1932 with the delivery of Ymer. The ship was thefirst that was able to maintain some degree of navigation in the northern Swedish and Finnish ports, but was mostly employed in keeping the southern ports open.rnBy the late 1960s enough icebreakers had been delivered to maintain year-round navigation in the Bay of Bothnia inall mild and normal winters. In the 1970s three large diesel-electricicebreakers Atle(1974), Frej(1975)and a new Ymer (1977), all built by Waertsilae, were delivered to the Swedish Maritime Administration and between them managed to maintain navigation year-round.
