Well established in other industrial fields, anti-vibration principles have come to be applied in the marine engineering sector to inhibit structure-borne ship noise Aware of the problem vibrations cause - and of the trend by shipowners towards improving life on board in an effort to retain seafarers -several engine-makers are developing systems aimed at reducing or eliminating noise and vibration. An important initiative has been the development by MTU Friedrichshafen, in cooperation with vibration technology specialists Paulstra and Stop-Choc, of a hybrid, active mounting system for marine diesel engines. The system combines an advanced conventional passive elastomer element with high-performance active components.
