摘要

Travel to destinations such as the Arctic and Antarctic is increasingly popular, but there is a growing body of opinion that environmentally fragile ecosystems need to be protected from the potentially adverse effects of human visitation. Vessels visiting such regions, it is argued, should be designed and equipped to reflect concerns about the challenging climate and protect the ecosystem. GAP Adventures in Canada knows all about the need for enhanced safety levels and the importance of protecting the marine environment in the event of an accident, having lost Explorer, which sank after striking an iceberg in the Bransfield Strait in November 2007. More than 150 passengers and crew had to take to the ship's lifeboats after the incident. All were subsequently rescued by another vessel but only after spending six hours in open lifeboats.
