Germany cannot hope to compete with the likes of Korea, Japan and China in terms of numbers and deadweight tonnage of ships under construction, but behind the big three it comes in a creditable fourth in world rankings. According to LR-Fairplay sources, in late August, German yards had 192 vessels with a combined deadweight of 4.22M tonnes under construction or on order. Taken as percentages of world totals, that equates to 3.77% of ship numbers and 1.56% of deadweight tonnage. Such low numbers however, hide the fact that both are almost double that of the nearest non-Asian countries. They also do not reveal the wide range of high-value vessel types that are built in Germany.
