Floating container cranes may be the answer to congestion in ports and the demand for fast handling of vessels, even in ports which are not fully equipped for receiving container ships. That is the opinion of both civil engineer Jan van Beemen and professor Han Ligteringen, manager - business development of Netherlands-based Royal Haskoning, who developed the floating container crane concept as part of a project called Container Terminal of the Future. The floating crane is claimed to be less expensive than land based cranes, and more flexible. Their invention may be an unwelcome one for organisations such as the Ceres Paragon Terminal in Amsterdam, where vessels can be handled at either side. As ships become wider, cranes designed for serving early generations of post-panamax box ships are proving to have insufficient reach to work the full width of the vessel.
