Apart from passenger ships, ferries and the occasional general cargo vessel, virtually all ship types with a power requirement above 25,000kW will opt for low-speed two-stroke main engines. More often than not, those engines will be installed in a single-engine, single-screw configuration. That might fly in the face of the trend towards redundant machinery installations, but supporters cite a generally good operational record for well-maintained ships using the concept. Their feelings, often based solely on experience, have been borne out by a recent study of machinery claims statistics carried out by the Swedish Club.
