Increasingly seen as the prime mover of choice aboard fast craft and in applications such as cruise ships, where high levels of onboard power are required, power-dense gas turbines also have the potential to 'outperform' diesel engines in generating duties. That is the view put forward by Turbomeca, which is developing an Advanced Cycle Low-power Gas Turbine Alternator (ACL GTA) Turbomeca is currently under contract to the UK Ministry of Defence to develop a 1.8MW advanced cycle gas turbine driving a high speed alternator, providing 800V DC output. The ACL GTA will, Turbomeca believes, have a number of advantages in naval and commercial service, being more reliable, more cost-effective and more environmentally friendly than diesel-based generators, and thus highly desirable. As Bernard Watier, Turbomeca's marketing manager, explained at the recent INEC 2004 conference, the design of the ACL GTA is progressing well, with the main sub-component contractors selected and manufacturing - together with testing of the turbine and recuperator - now underway, and, overall, said Watier, the ACL GTA remains "on track" to deliver the aims of the demonstrator programme.
