摘要

Freight rates rise and freight rates fall and ship operators have to ride the wild rollercoaster of supply and demand but for ship repairers a constant steady stream of work is almost guaranteed. Almost, but not quite, because there are factors repairers have to take into consideration which ship operators do not. While a ship can move into new trading areas with relative ease - and just now most of them seem to be heading towards China - a repair yard is static and relies mainly on work from local traders. Then there is the increasing size of ships, particularly cruise and container ships, which will rule out future drydocking in all but the largest yards for some of today's newbuildings. Finally environmental constraints on disposal are stopping some yards from taking on the work of stripping obsolete TBT coatings from ships.
