Malcom McLean is often credited with 'inventing' thesystem of containerised transport that helped revolutionise global trade over the past half century, but that is not actually accurate.By establishing the first regular containerised service in 1957, imposing a greatly improved system on reluctant longshoremen, he commercialised a well-known though still theoretical concept for a quantum leap in efficiency and theft reduction in ocean transportation, thereby officially kicking off the transformation from breakbulk to container.
