The slump in the price of oil and bunkers over the past year could tempt tanker owners to increase operating speeds. This could expand available capacity, thereby depressing freight rates. When submitting their thesis for a master's degree at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration in Bergen last year, Mathias Owing Maanum and Henrik Prosch Seines observed that theoretical optimal speed models are generally based on the view that vessel speed is positively related to freight rates and negatively related to bunker prices.
