Interest rates have already risen in reaction to Donald Trump's US election win last month and are expected to rise further in the years ahead. The question for shipping is: could escalating interest costs push some borrowers over the brink? Interest rates are important to shipping for two key reasons. First, shipping companies are often highly leveraged, with long-term loans priced at a spread over the London Interbank Offer Rate (LIBOR). If LIBOR increases by a significant degree and for a significant period, higher interest expenses could erode owners' cash balances.
