Agents, brokers, and charterers are dealing with some of the same problems afflicting their shipowner customers, which are being hit by the faltering energy market and the increasing cost of improving security. Charterers and agents specialising in the project cargo and tanker markets, where the effects of the downturn in energy prices are particularly strong, are in a good position to gauge the implications as well as the outlook. "I would say right now we're fighting choppy seas with storm clouds always lurking on the horizon," Edwin Bastian, director of global sales for BBC Chartering USA, told a commerce club audience at the Port of Houston in July.
