When Shell took a final investment decision (FID) on the Prelude FLNG (floating liquefied natural gas) project in Western Australia, the FLNG segment became hyped up. At related conferences, analysts enthused about how the scheme would bring more gas to the market and offer alternatives to oil. But today, no more than 10 FLNG projects have won an FID green light. Golar LNG and Exmar have ordered FLNG vessels speculatively, but the decisions of those companies were tied to their existing LNG shipping businesses and did not accurately reflect the FLNG market, said the IHS Market Survey System (MSS).
