Fuelled by a belief that 'bigger is better', mergers and stock flotations have redrawn the competitive landscape for US-listed tanker owners. According to new data analysis by IHS Fairplay, Euronav will close the year as the largest tanker owner in the US equity arena, followed by Frontline in second and Gener8 Maritime in third. Twelve months ago, the 'top three' were Teekay, DHT, and Scorpio. The 30 November approval of the merger between Frontline and Frontline 2012 was just the latest in a series of developments for the public tanker market. It coincided with Overseas Shipholding Group's continuing process of listing its Class A shares and was preceded by Euronav's IPO in January, the General Maritime merger with Navig8 Crude Tankers in May and subsequent IPO of Gener8 in July, and the reverse-merger public listing of Pyxis Tankers in November.
