Innovations in robotics, driverless vehicles, big data, and simulation software will gain in importance at ports in the next decade as shrinking global trade volumes underscore the need for efficiency and cost cutting, a study has found. Research commissioned by global port operator Dubai Ports World (DPW) said the continuing slowdown in global trade, driven mainly by the deceleration of China's economy, means competition between ports and across the logistics sector is certain to intensify, tightening the focus on cost savings and efficiency gains. "The ports and logistics sector has already embraced technology to a certain extent," the report said. "However, over the next decade the [ports and logistics] sector will witness more substantive changes as automation becomes more widespread and operations are increasingly directed and optimised in real time by sensors and intelligent software."
