In terms of new port development, southern Africa might appear to be lagging behind eastern and western Africa, where Chinese investment is driving construction on deepwater ports. However, the region already has the continent's most sophisticated port networks - now set to be developed even further. In Namibia, a greenfield container terminal scheme near the existing Walvis Bay port is well on track and could transform its prospects and those of its supporting logistical chain. On South Africa's west coast, at Saldanha Bay, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has finally taken the initiative towards creating ship repair facilities to cater for the oil and gas (O&G) industry. The deepwater port will have a 380m-long, 21 m-deep oil rig repair wharf and a large Capesize floating dock. An additional 500 m-long berth will provide for ancillary vessel repair work. TNPA has indicated a price tag of ZAR6.5 billion (USD450 million).
