British and Australian national Alex Harrison is upbeat about the offshore scene, particularly in the region covered by his office in Perth, Western Australia, and he points to an "unprecedented level of investment" pouring into the market. Harrison, managing director of LOC Australia since July 2011, cites numerous ongoing "mega projects", with others in the pipeline. Ageing installations set for decommissioning offer another opportunity. "For us, there's another market, which is the removal of some.of these facilities at the end of life," he says, typically after they have been operating for between 15 and 40 years. Further, the bullish offshore market in the state of Western Australia does not benefit the country alone, its neighbours also gain since works are commissioned outside, particularly those involving the fabrication of parts for offshore platforms. "The vast majority of the construction of the large items for these projects is fabricated in Southeast Asia - either in Singapore or Batam, Indonesia. Some are constructed in South Korea or China."
