South African port operator Transnet says the Port of Durban will be unable to cope with the expected vessel and cargo traffic increase envisaged during the next 10-20 years. Transnet has bought the site of the old Durban International Airport, 11km from the existing port, for almost ZAR2Bn (S189M), and is expected to spend about ZAR100Bn to expand port capacity. "Durban is best placed for the new port due to its position in proximity to Gauteng," said Marc Descoins, programme director of Transnet's Durban dug-out port project, noting that both Richards Bay and Ngqura in the Eastern Cape were ruled out because of a variety of factors, including cost and logistical challenges.
