A new EU-funded research project has got under way, with the aim of developing systems to provide ships' crews with early warnings of impending pirate attacks. The IPATCH project aims to combine data from a variety of technological devices to alert crews to suspicious behaviour by other ships and small craft before an attack ensues. To achieve this, the research team is looking to combine data already available via radar, Automatic Identification System, and international databases with that which can be obtained by other devices, such as cameras and infrared and thermal sensors. The €4.2M ($5.72M), three-year project benefits from about €3M of funding from the European Commission's seventh research frame-vork programme.
