European customs agencies are testing a new mobile system for detecting nuclear material, with potential applications at sea and airports. The passive Modular Detection System for Special Nuclear Material (MODES_SNM) was developed by a team of European organisations, with €3M ($4.1M) funding from the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. The system detects the spectra of both hot and cold neutrons, as well as gamma radiation. MODES_SNM has already undergone extensive tests at the Port of Rotterdam and the EC Joint Research Centre at Ispra in Italy. Irish Tax & Customs has also tested the system, mainly at the Port of Dublin, to verify that stationary containers hold no fissile materials such as enriched uranium and plutonium, or the radiological components of a 'dirty bomb'.
