In 2008, Dubai's Drydocks World (DDW) acquired four yards in Southeast Asia, in a fully debt-financed deal. Then shipping crashed along with the rest of the world economy. This crunch put the very existence of DDW in doubt. The subsidiary of the Dubai World (DW) conglomerate needed a swashbuckling visionary to save it. In Khamis Buamim it found one. In May 2010, he was called in to stop the bleeding by DW boss Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the second most powerful man in Dubai, the shipping powerhouse of the United Arab Emirates federation. "When I came, as you would appreciate, we were totally overleveraged as a company," Buamim, DDW chairman and CEO, tells IHS Maritime. "In total disintegration. Time ticking... a bomb waiting. We had to rethink everything [and] get the company focused on rebuilding itself from within."
