摘要

Much emotion was generated by a series of discussions about unmanned ships at the beginning of the year; now maritime appears to be warming to the idea. Most of the concern has been around the prospect of ships operating with no human intervention either on the navigational bridge or in the engine room. Comments received by IHS Maritime focused on safety, security, or jobs, but two significant developments are changing the landscape. The first is the worrying shortage of trained and experienced seafarers. This magazine has discussed reasons why young people no longer want to go to sea: according to popular opinion, there is more rewarding employment ashore. Those who responded to my earlier articles fearing for their jobs need not worry: unmanned ships won't be sailing the seas for at least 10 years.
