For much of the world, shipping is best seen through the tinted glasses of history. Some excellent maritime museums around the world focus on those aspects of the industry that tell the story of how shipping enabled trade, first with the region, then with the wider world. The best museums allow children to buzz around the exhibits until, like hungry flies, they settle on one exhibit that takes their young interest; invariably it's pirates or shipwrecks. If everything goes according to plan this week, Genoa's maritime museum will begin putting together one of the very best exhibits in what is already a remarkable collection of maritime memorabilia. The arrival of the refloated Costa Concordia has rekindled a fascination with shipping that had long been slipping away in Italy.
