Given the 24-hour nature of our world, the fact that anyone with a smartphone can become an instant news reporter, and a general public fascination with shipping incidents, it is not surprising that a large ship in trouble, especially near a coastline, will attract a lot of attention. The recent high-profile cases of Costa Concordia and Rena are examples of this trend, with the two cases representing the largest and third-largest protection and indemnity (P&l) insurance claims in history, with a possible final combined 'bill' in excess of $2Bn. There are a number of reasons for this high cost and they can be summarised as follows: general inflation over the past 50 years; wrecks are often no longer just left where they lie; and improving technology makes possible, and costly, what was impossible in the past.
