The four cornerstone maritime trade nations in southern Africa - Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, and South Africa - are trying to counter emerging threats to maritime security as the focus switches to expanding the region's flourishing oil and gas sector. Southern African waters are still relatively secure as a result, with just one incident of piracy since 2010. Still, the outlook is deteriorating, with illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing increasing and Gulf of Guinea piracy likely to move southward.
