Hong Kong was a marvellous business centre from which to conduct shipping business in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, wrote Anthony Hardy in his retrospective on Wallem Group, Typhoon Wallem. A shipbroker by calling, Hardy rose through the ranks of the company to become managing director and chairman. In 1957 the Hong Kong Shipowners Association was founded with the gathering of 11 owners. Wallem became the first non-Chinese member in 1966. Four years later the company was voted into the chair and Hardy became chairman.
