Federico Esteve is a naval architect but also has degrees and diplomas in marketing, foreign trade, and computer technology. He began his career with Alfa Laval in 1967, moving on to Bureau Veritas in Paris in 1968 but returning to Spain to join former state-owned shipping company Elcano the following year. This began an association with the company that lasted until 1987. During the 1980s he served as chairman of shipping companies Compania Trasmediter-ranea and Naviera Mallorquina and of ship agency and forwarding group Aucona. At the same time he acted as an adviser to a number of other companies and public bodies.
