Auckland had cause for celebration in July. Completing its two-and-a-half-year project to deepen the northern berth at its Fergusson Container Terminal, Ports of Auckland (POAL) welcomed the return of Maersk's Southern Star service to the New Zealand port, which could add an extra 20,000teu annually. Originally calling at Auckland on both its Northern and Southern Star two-loop, 10-vessel weekly service between Tanjung Pelepas, Singapore, Brisbane and six New Zealand ports, in December 2011 Maersk moved the Southern Star service to Tauranga at the height of POAL's dispute with the Maritime Union of New Zealand, losing Auckland a large chunk of dairy giant Fonterra's business.
