It is not only transhipment hubs that are expanding Caribbean capacity. Numerous terminal developments catering to domestic cargo are also under way. In Mariel, Cuba, the first phase of the new terminal is nearing completion and should be open for business in early 2014, sources with knowledge of the project told Fairplay. Work on the 800,000teu/year facility began in 2011, with construction by Odebrecht of Brazil and management to be handled by PSA of Singapore. Draught at Mariel will be 17.9m.
