The Korean Register of Shipping (KRS) may command a loyal following among compatriot shipowners but its registered tonnage still trails that of more established classification societies. This is something that newly elected KRS chairman Chon Young-kee wants to address. In March, Chon became the first chairman of the Korean Register of Shipping to be elected from among internal candidates. Within months, he has had to tackle the challenges that came with the recent shipping and shipbuilding slump. With effect from July, all KRS executives had to take a 5％ cut in salary.
