A familiar fear hangs over the offshore support vessel (OSV) market in the Gulf of Mexico: that too many newbuildings are in the pipeline for available future business. Leading players have started hedging for that possibility. Yet almost all quarters insist the recent boom in day rates and utilisation levels for US-flag OSVs in the Gulf of Mexico is not about to dissipate. "Certain vessel classes in the US [Gulf] may be choppy in 2H13 but we see our average day rates continuing their upward trend," GulfMark Offshore chief executive Quintin Kneen asserted on his company's 2Q.13 conference call.
