A negligence case is scheduled to begin in December against Maersk Line and Waterman Steamship Co over the pirate hijacking of the Maersk Alabama in April 2009. The lawsuit, brought against the vessel operator and the crewing agency by half of the vessel's crew, hotly contests the heroism depicted in the recently released film Captain Phillips. Originally filed in 2010 in Houston, the lawsuit, which names Maersk Line Ltd and Waterman Steamship Co as defendants, contends that the pirate hijacking of the Maersk Alabama would never have taken place if not for the negligence of Capt Richard Phillips, Maersk Line, and Waterman Steamship. The case has since moved to circuit court in Mobile, Alabama.
